Make Extra Money Driving a Wrapped Car

Make Extra Money Driving a Wrapped CarMake Extra Money Driving a Wrapped CarIs there anywhere you can look these days without seeing an advertisement? Not. Whether youre looking at ads playing at the checkout line, the fuel pump, in the restroom, or on your phone, ads are everywhere. And now, theyre covering cars. Its called a wrap, and its gaining popularity with advertisers as they try to reach their target market. From Buses and Trains to Cars In 1993, SuperGraphics wrapped a bus in computer-generated vinyl. The Crystal Pepsi ad became the first rolling advertising in this form. Then there was Amtrak. A coach car on San Diego train 773 was wrapped for Holiday Inn Hotels, and it worked effectively. But this form of advertising is expensive. Smaller companies couldnt take parte in this ad medium so easily. Plus, those that can afford it are having to wait. The bus and train supply are limited when you get right down to it. So how do you satisfy supply and demand, reach a target market and offer a cost-effective alternative to buses and trains? The answer is to wrap cars.? Theres Big Money in Driving a Wrapped Car At first, it was Volkswagen Beetles that became colorfully wrapped. Now its old cars, new cars, SUVs, and minivans. But why should you drive an advertisement on wheels? What about several hundred dollars a month? Or a new car? Free Car Media offers drivers use of a specific car wrapped in an advertisers materials. However, these drivers even have to agree to be present at certain promotional events as part of the deal. Ultimately, its their advertising client (the sponsor) that decides which kind of vehicle - new or used - that ends up with the products wrap. If the sponsor decides to give up their vehicle wrap at the end of their contract, the ad space is then sold to another company.? Autowraps pays drivers anywhere between $100 and $3,200 a month. Drivers are selected based on their location, age, sex and car type. They dont offer free vehi cles, but over 55,000 people have volunteered to have their personal cars wrapped. Autowraps provides a unique advantage for their clients. Sponsors can purchase wraps for any amount of time. So when the clients ad campaign changes, so can the car. Drivers generate additional revenue through special promotions, events and distributing product samples and other materials. For example, a driver may be asked to drive their personal, wrapped vehicle to a trade show or store opening. Since these cars might be on display at special events, depending on the client, they might have special features on them as well. Yahoo began an ad campaign with wrapped taxis in New York City. These cabs featured wireless Web access inside. Head and Shoulders and Sony both have video monitors inside their wrapped cars to enhance the interactive display. How to Get Your Car Wrapped Before you log on to these sites and fill out their questionnaires, consider this youre not just riding around in your car anymore. Basically, you become a representative of the client. For instance, Free Car educates its drivers on the clients products/services. The company even offers a sample of the product - from soda to computers - when possible. Execs want you to know everything about the product. When people see you out and about in your wrapped car, they may have questions. This way, youll know the answers. They also want to know your driving habits. If you have a ten-minute commute and have the car parked in a garage 95% of the time, its a waste of their money. Are You a Prime Candidate? You can expect to be grilled about your driving habits. The questionnaires may ask what your typical day is like. How long do you spend commuting to work or school? How often do you eat at restaurants? All of this information is gathered to match up your daily activities with the clients needs. Say you work out in a gym five days a week and youve got season tickets to the Jaguars home games. Youd be the i deal candidate for a Nike wrap. Finally, Can You Handle All The Attention? If youre extremely shy, then driving an advertisement on wheels probably isnt for you. Not only do you get a lot of looks, but youll also even get waves, and you might even make a friend or two.

Youre Never Too Old to Go Back to School

Youre Never Too Old to Go Back to SchoolYoure Never Too Old to Go Back to SchoolAre you considering furtherbeiing your education but you think youre too old for school? Many would-be students over age 35 see age as an obstacle to continuing their educations, but some have tackled it to prove that youre never too old for school. Brenda Echols Back-to-School Age 58Degree Masters in Nursing Management/Leadership Brenda returned to school at the age of 58. She wanted to pursue her masters in nursing management/leadership with Western Governors University, a nonprofit online university designed for working adults. She welchesand totenstill is the only person in her family with an advanced degree. Heres what she had to say about her journey to a masters degree as an older student. My biggest challenge was overcoming breast cancer while working on my degree. It almost took me out of school, but when I thought about it and talked it over, I decided to hold on and hold out as strong as I could. I believe others can do it, too, if they believe. Its never too late to believe. Being a student helped me maintain my focus during my challenges. My dream sustained me along with family and friends. I never missed a beat. Sarah Kelly Back-to-School Age 47Degree Cosmetology LicenseCareer Change Banking to salon owner Sarah went back to school at 47 years old. She resigned from her job at Wells Fargo Bank in May, took a summer break, then entered the Aveda Institute Minneapolis to get her cosmetology license in October of that same year. Shed received her bachelors degree in Economics from the University of Minnesota back in 1990. Its leid exactly stufeuate school, but Ive opened a salon and have had a very successful shop for a few years now. Ive been so much happier in my new vocation. Its my dream job and its absolutely what I was meant to do. Too old for school? Absolutely not I was anxious about going to school with kids half my age, but I was also a more dedicated an d serious student. I was motivated to lose weight- it is the beauty industry, after all. I worried for nothing. The kids were gracious and respectful. A lot of them called me Mom. I was their surrogate mom away from home. I was flattered when they asked me for advice. I was gratified that they accepted me in their lives. I was floored when they asked me to speak at our graduation. It was very flattering. Theresa Cardamone Back-to-School Age 55Degree B.A. in zwischenstaatlich Studies As a 55-year-old freshman with zero college credits, Theresa had a steep road ahead of her when she enrolled at NYU School of Professional Studies (NYU-SCPS). Thered been a 38-year gap since her last formal schooling, and she had no SAT scores. But she did have decades of life experience from which to draw. Id been a geschftliches miteinander manager/outreach coordinator for a prominent childrens theater. Id developed and managed a world-class Arabian horse farm. Id been heavily endorsed as a candida te for the Seattle School Board, lobbied the Washington State legislature on education issues, and ridden across the United States on the Bicentennial Wagon Train. But I couldnt secure a minimum wage job. I was being screened out because I had no college degree. My B.A. concentration in International Studies will bring my resume up to date and Ill maximize my earning potential for the rest of my productive life. Has it been challenging? Yes. Worthwhile? Hell, yes. It helps that my personal standards are in sync with the universitys high bar. Frank Anthony Polito Back-to-School Age 36Degree MFA in Dramatic WritingCareer Change Actor to writer Frank received his Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Dramatic Writing from Carnegie Mellon University at the age of 36 after pursuing a career as an actor in New York City for 11 years. I was the second oldest of the group of writers studying in the program. There were indeed challenges, like spending five to eight hours each day in a classroom af ter being out of school for over a decade. Sometimes the teachers would talk down to us because most of the other students were right out of undergrad. I often had to remind them that Id already lived in the real world. I havent done much dramatic writing since graduation, but Ive taken the skills I learned to begin a career as a novelist. Ive published four books so far, the most recent being a novel called Lost that I self-published under my own imprint. In terms of tips for older students, Id say that you should treat the younger students as your peers. Some of them will act as if they have all the answers, so try to remember how grown up you felt at the age of 20 or 21. You might even find that some of your teachers are younger than you, and you need to give them just as much respect, if not more. Theyll be grading your work, after all. Debbie McDonald Back-to-School Age 58Degree Medical Billing CodingFormer Occupation Small business owner Debbie had reservations about goin g back to school at 58 years old, knowing that she would be older than her classmates and probably even older than her instructors. But after owning several small businesses, including a childrens consignment store and an RV service and repair shop, the Western New York resident found herself unemployed and looking for a more stable position. She knew that the healthcare field was growing, so she decided to enroll in Bryant Stratton College ansprechbars Medical Administration for Billing and Coding Degree program. You just have to keep going and put yourself out there to other people because youll never know what comes back to you when you do. You might lose some of your memory and mind when you get older, but going back to school really proved to me that youre never too old to learn. Nancy B. Irwin, PsyD, C.Ht. Back-to-School Age 44Degree Doctorate in Clinical PsychologyCareer Change Stand-up comic to psychotherapy/clinical hypnosis, speaker/author After working as a stand-up comic for many years, Nancy returned to school at age 44 to earn her doctorate in clinical psychology. She found that she was bored only working 30 minutes a day, so she began volunteering at a shelter for sexually abused teens. It was an absolute epiphany. I fell in love with it- it woke up the healer in me and now Im an expert in sexual abuse recovery and prevention. I treat sex offenders as well as victims. Its my belief that the best way to help victims is to help the perpetrators. I went on to write the self-help, non-fiction Your-Turn Changing Direction in Midlife, which is a collection of over 40 stories of people over 40 who made positive transitions in their professional and personal lives. I learned to answer this one, The same age Ill be if I dont finish Yvonne Conte Back-to-School Age 45Career Change Salesperson to motivational keynote s peaker/author Getting a degree at Monroe Community College changed Yvonnes entire life. She couldnt find work after losing her sales job due to a corporate merger. She couldnt pay her bills and she s-lost her home to the bank. Financially, she was ruined. She was 45 years old with only a high school education. I enrolled full time as a communications major, not really knowing what I would do with that degree. I learned to work a TV camera in my classes, to write scripts, and to run a radio station. But what I really learned was how to research, interact, write, and network. And because I graduated with a 3.85 GPA, I had confidence for the first time in my life. That belief in myself was worth the price of tuition. I began teaching classes about writing, stand-up comedy, and acting at local businesses. Eventually, I began to speak for local businesses and I was a full-time keynote speaker and a published author within a year of graduation. Ive now published six times and I deliver 50 to 60 keynotes a year all over the United States. None of that would have happened had I not attended college. Rhoda Weiss ?Back-to-School Age 50Degree Ph.D. in Leadership and Change Rhoda recently received her Ph.D. in Leadership and Change some 30 years after earning her masters degree. Many friends and colleagues asked her why she would do this. After all, she had a successful career and she didnt need her Ph.D. to advance. It was something I always wanted to do for myself, a personal goal. It certainly wasnt easy. It took a good seven years to complete, all the while keeping up my work schedule, my leadership commitments, and many other commitments. What helped me was the fact that it was a high-residency program. It met throughout the year for determined periods of time. Half my cohorts were over 50 and I listened to older graduates who had been through it. I learned a great deal about leadership, organizational change, quantitative and qualitative research, and so much mo re. Youll need friends inside and outside the program to support you emotionally. And, yes, Id advise everyone to do it and I would likely do it again. Kami Evans Back-to-School Age 41Career Change Headhunter to holistic health coach As a successful headhunter with her own agency supporting the technology and financial services sectors, Kami flew to nine countries within three weeks when she was only 29. I thought I was a rock star, so much so that I even had the audacity to fly the Concord to England because I couldnt be bothered with first class. I thought money grew on trees and it was just going to be in abundance forever. I made enormous investments at my local places of worship Christian Dior and Luis Vuitton. Then I did the usual marriage, mommy, and becoming-a-yoga teacher thing, but I wondered what else I could do. I came to the realization that I was 41 and had skills in yoga, social networking, and a bit of branding. I dabbled in fundraising and development, but that wasnt a good fit and the money wasnt the same. I decided Id become a holistic health coach because I still had the entrepreneurial spirit. The program offered at the Institute of Integrative Nutrition ticked all the boxes. Learning is all online, support is via website and iPad, and it gives me the flexibility to work from home and, hopefully, help others and network with like-minded people. This is a far cry from the Concord days, but it sure feels more fulfilling. Andrew Yearde Degree B.A. in Economics Andrew started a small consulting company called CBAY Analytics with a partner, but it eventually ceased operation. The firm had trouble finding clients and they were in the midst of a great economic downturn. Andrew had financed the business with all of his savings and he had deferred taking a salary. He was left without money or unemployment compensation when the lights went out. It took 15 years to process my green card and for me to gain citizenship, so I put off college and worked hard. I researched two universities in after my business folded, and the NYU-SCPS program admission individuals seemed to be the most receptive. They offered a more comprehensive program for an adult student. Initially, I had no money and no source of tuition, so I managed to obtain a private student loan to cover the first semester. I was able to obtain financial aid, scholarships, and subsidized loans in subsequent years. Ultimately, the assistance covered maybe half the total cost. I finally found employment with Amazon.com at the lowest level as a warehouse worker. My employer did not reimburse tuition, but they approved time off when I needed it- as long as the work got done. Adult students have to balance both demands. Expect to lose key friends and family members during the journey, but the ones you replace them with will be invaluable. Its worth it You become more efficient and thats not lost in the workplace. The sense of confidence, introspection, and pride from go ing back to school is priceless. Chris Tobias Back-to-School Age 42Career Director of Educational Excitement Chris returned to school at age 42 when a layoff was looming at his company. The layoff thankfully passed him by, but he took the opportunity to get the education he had always wanted. If age has taught me anything, its taught me that you never know whats coming next. So why not study the topics that excite you? Perhaps your passions will lead you to something unexpected, something better than you thought possible. As a returning older student, I quickly discovered that I lacked the skills to handle a heavy load of schoolwork along with full-time employment. Fortunately, my business background helped me to research academic success tools and create a hands-on set of techniques for efficient, enjoyable school success. When I first heard news of my companys planned layoff, I had no idea what was next for me. Today, Im having a wonderful time helping other students, young an d old, succeed in school. It has been a wonderfully unexpected outcome. Elizabeth Venturini Back-to-School Age 50Career Change Marketing to college career strategist Elizabeth is a 50-year-old graduate of UCLAs College Counseling Program. She makes the college admissions process easier for high-achieving, late-blooming teenagers and all the stressed-out parents who love them. She focuses on the end result of graduating with a college degree getting a job. leid knowing all the terminology used in education was the biggest challenge I had to face. Coming from the corporate world was an advantage because I had a business perspective and I used that throughout my coursework. The UCLA College Counseling program provides students with the tools they need to help teens and adults with todays demanding college admissions process. It gave me the opportunity to start a new career and to do something I feel passionate about. Id suggest that anyone in career transition whos interested in go ing back to college to complete a career interest assessment first. Discover your current likes, interests, values, and work style. This is important because what you might have valued in your career when you were 20, 30, or even 40 years old might have changed now that youre in their 50s or older. Greg Mantell Degree Masters in Broadcast JournalismCareer Internet Talk Show Host Greg decided to return to grad school for his masters in Broadcast Journalism at the University of Missouri at Columbia. He saw it as an extension of what he was already doing with an Internet talk show, and the best way to take it to the next level. He was able to get in due to networking, placement, and connections. He says that it didnt really hit him that he would be older than many of the students who were in their 20s until a few people mentioned it. As an interviewer, Im used to interacting with people of all ages- I interview many people both younger and older than I am. I received a graduate res earch assistantship with the Investigative Reporters and Editors program, and they seemed to like the fact that I had real-world experience. Personally, being older hasnt phased me as much because many people are going back to school at an older age now and I did already graduate from college years ago. Unlike a 20-year-old who doesnt know what he or she wants to do, I know what I want to do and Im very focused on doing it. Im sure that adding the masters program can only help take things to the next level. Advice? if you know why you want to do the program, then go for it. Theres no reason not to. Its a different world these days. Ive read that entering students at Harvard Medical School range in age from their 20s to early 40s.

Game-Changing Technology for 3D Printing Metal

Game-Changing Technology for 3D Printing Metal Game-Changing Technology for 3D Printing Metal Game-Changing Technology for 3D Printing Metal If it hadnt been for a bit of serendipity, Owen Hildreth may never have thought about solving a problem that has developed into a potentially game-changing 3D printing method, promising to overcome a major challenge in producing metal objects. Some two years ago, Hildreth, an assistant professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering in Arizona State Universitys engineering school, was attending a seminar on additive manufacturing. The presenter mentioned how hard it is to remove required metal supports when 3D printing metal, then showed a humorous sketch of someone trying to whack out the supports and jokingly asked if anyone knew of a water-soluble metal. Everybody chuckled, Hildreth says. But not Hildreth. With a background in selective metal etching, he thought, I can do that. Most metals are actually chemically soluble if the ph is low enough. Its not that hard. So I started working on it professionally, and thats how I got into it. That offhand quip has resulted in work enabling 3D printing of a metal object and then selectively dissolving the support material after the object is printed with a simple electrochemical etching technique. If the presenter hadnt made that joke, Hildreth doesnt think he would have thought about the problem. My background is not in metal additive manufacturing. My background is in nanoscale etching phenomena, he says. So I had a lot of experience finetuning a local environment to make a highly localized chemical etching reaction. It comes down to being in the right place at the right time and having a background that made me think about the problem in a different way. ASU engineer Owen Hildreth (right), with ASU engineering graduate student Avinash Mamidanna, is part of a team that has developed a new technique to 3D-print metal materials. Image: Jessica Hochreiter/ASU Others have focused on making the supports easier to remove from a design standpoint, to change the shape, the area of contact or number of supports. Hildreth says 3D printing of metal objects, whether components or larger devices with particularly complex designs, has posed a big challenge not faced by plastics. Support material for plastics can easily be cut off, melted, or dissolved. With metals, they have to be machined or beveled off, a process involving laborious and costly machining techniques, he points out. Last year, Hildreth and his collaborators had their first breakthrough by 3D printing a stainless steel arch supported in the center by carbon steel. The carbon steel was electrochemically removed in a mixture of nitric acid with bubbling oxygen. The stainless steel is very chemically resistant. The carbon steel is not, Hildreth says. That greatly reduces the post-processing required to remove support structures from 3D-printed metal components. But the team didnt stop there and went on to develop a method that brings dissolvable support capabilities to additive manufacturing systems that are limited to a single-material, such as the powder bed fusion printing technique, one that everybody in industry uses, Hildreth says. The team developed a method of removing the support by introducing a sensitizing agent into the built part when it goes through annealing, a post-printing heat process to remove stresses that occur during printing. We add some chemicals during the heat treatment which diffuses into the component and the support, and it changes the composition of the top 100 microns or so of the entire built part, transforming that layer into carbon steel, he explains. Because the supports are only a few hundred microns wide, they are totally dissolved by the chemical. Components are usually rather large, at least several centimeters or inches, and losing 100 or so microns of material is no big deal, Hildreth said. The team described the study and process in a paper published online recently. After printing a part of two interlocking rings with each ring about four centimeters wide and successfully removing the supports with the new technique, Hildreth got a quote from a machine shop of the cost of machining away the supports: $4,000 and five days. We did it for less than a dollars worth of chemicals and in significantly less time. A lot of time on a build platform, you might have eighty parts. If you had 80 of these you are talking about $320,000 worth of machine shop time just to remove the supports. Plus hundreds of man hours. This technology allows us to do all eighty parts at once for probably less than $10 with acid, and it takes five minutes to brush off some excess dust, Hildreth says. Although the process took Hildreth 32 hours, he says its likely to take about 7 to 10 hours on higher quality equipment. Were working on getting that time down. Next, the team is working on understanding and controlling the process better and improving the part in other ways to control surface finish and smoothness so that the part will perform better. The team also plans to develop the process for other materials. Were fairly certain our method is going to be applicable to a broad range of metals used in manufacturing, Hildreth says. Nancy S. Giges is an independent writer. It comes down to being in the right place at the right time and having a background that made me think about the problem in a different way.Prof. Owen Hildreth, Arizona State University

Dumbass Mistakes New Grads Make in Interviews

Dumbass Mistakes New Grads Make in Interviews Dumbass Mistakes New Grads Make in Interviews Dumbass Mistakes New Grads Make in Interviews In a recent CareerBuilder poll, more than 3,000 hiring managers and HR professionals were asked to identify the biggest mistakes new college graduates make during the application and interview process. Based on the percentage of respondents who gave each answer, these are the top 8 dumbass moves among new grads (not to mention a few other age groups...ahem). 1. Acting bored or cocky (69%) This sounds familiar. We had someone interviewing at recently who seemed pretty good, but two or three people used the word cocky to describe the person's attitude. (Our managers, like those at many companies, solicit opinions from everybody who comes in contact with a job candidate, not just those in the interview room hint, hint.) If you're a new grad, it's important to realize that you may have been the coolest kid on campus a few months ago, but today youre an unproven beginner. A positive, respectful attitude is one way to set yourself apart. Confident = good. Cocky = bad. 2. Not dressing appropriately (65%) Your interview attire, like your attitude, says a lot about whether you're serious about proving yourself, or just think you're entitled to the job because you're you. Your clothing should be clean, pressed, and modest. As they say in middle school, no visible boxers, bellies, or boobs. 3. Coming to the interview with no knowledge of the company (59%) There's no excuse for not researching an organization that's considering hiring you. They have a web site; use it to learn what they do, who they are, what they specialize in. Google the executives' names (after all, they'll be Googling you; see #8, below). 4. Not turning off cell phones or electronic devices (57%) Frankly, I'm surprised this isnt No. 1. If you accidentally leave your phone on and it rings during the interview, don't get flustered and start babbling, OMG, I can't believe I did that! Offer a brief, sincere apology, turn off the phone (without checking who it is), then carry on professionally as if nothing happened. 5. Not asking good questions during the interview (50%) If you don't ask anything, you must not be interested. That's what the hiring manager will assume. This is a place where you supposedly want to spend most of your waking hours for the next couple years or more. You must want to know something. Besides, there are certain questions you should always ask. 6. Asking what the pay is before the company considered them for the job (39%) Mentioning salary in a first interview is like asking your crush what s/he plans to spend on you during your relationship before you've even agreed on a second date. You have to flirt and make sure they're attracted to you before you ask about a financial commitment. (No, not literally! That'd be a whole other dumbass move.) 7. Spamming employers with the same resume and/or cover letter (23%) This guy John really, really wants to work for Company A, so he applies for every job opening Company A posts, whether he's qualified or not. Annoyed by John's never-ending resume spam, Company A's recruiters unofficially blacklist him (although if asked, they'll deny it). Don't be like John. Tailor your resume for the one or two jobs at your target company that align with your skills. 8. Failure to remove unprofessional photos/content from social networking pages, Web pages, blogs, etc. (20%) Dude, you will be Googled. Employers today use every means at their disposal to uncover red flags that might foretell a bad hire. So, hide all Internet evidence of your past (and present) indiscretions. The transition from college to the real world is tough, and our mistakes are good teachers. Committing one of these eight blunders doesn't mean you're doomed, nor does avoiding them guarantee youll get the job. Butgenerally speaking, it's fair to sayless dumbass leads to more job offers.

10 Common Behavioral Interview Questions and How to Answer Them

10 Common Behavioral Interview Questions and How to Answer Them 10 Common Behavioral Interview Questions and How to Answer Them Hint: It Starts Way Before You Get to the Interview One cliché we’ve all heard is that past behavior predicts future behavior. That may or may not be psychologically sound, but it is the theory behind behavioral interview questions. Many recruiters believe that the best way to gain insight into how you’d handle certain situations is to ask you to tell a story about how you handled a similar situation in the past. No matter how experienced you are, it can be tough to come up with a detailed story in the middle of an interview, so it’s important to prepare ahead of time. With that in mind, here are 10 sample behavioral interview questions and suggestions for answering them successfully. “Describe a situation where you disagreed with a supervisor.” What they’re looking for: Communication skills, ability to formulate an argument, ability to compromise, and willingness to take direction. What to say: Don’t talk about an argument you had â€" especially an ongoing argument. Instead, describe a situation where you presented your arguments calmly and carefully listened to your manager’s position. The specific resolution isn’t as important as the process. If applicable, talk about how the disagreement ended up strengthening your relationship. “Tell me about a time when you had a conflict at work.” What they’re looking for: Emotional intelligence and conflict-resolution skills. What to say: Try to avoid personal conflicts. Instead, choose a situation that allows you to talk about a professional disagreement. Talk about how you communicated your position, how you listened to learn more about your colleague’s position, how you resolved the problem, and, if appropriate, how the disagreement impacted the relationship. Be careful not to demonstrate bitterness or resentment, especially if the resolution didn’t go your way. “Tell me about a situation where you had to solve a difficult problem.” What they’re looking for: Critical-thinking skills, creativity, persistence, and people skills. How to answer: Choose an example that you remember clearly enough to describe your thought processes as well as the specific steps you took. Your interviewer doesn’t just want to hear what you did; he wants to hear why you did it. “Describe a project or idea that was implemented primarily because of your efforts.” What they’re looking for: Accountability, persistence, thoroughness, and resourcefulness. How to answer: If possible, choose a situation that you saw through from beginning to end. And you’ll probably get bonus points if you can include something about how you worked with other people to get it done. “Tell me about a time when you worked well under pressure.” What they’re looking for: Mental and emotional toughness. How to answer: This is one of the trickier questions. If you set the bar too low, the interviewer is likely to think, “You call that pressure?” On the other hand, it’s important to choose a situation you handled exceptionally well. Your best bet is to go with the most stressful example you have where you still performed well. “Tell me about a time when you had to delegate tasks during a project.” What they’re looking for: Emotional intelligence, critical thinking, management style, follow-up. How to answer: Start by describing the situation and why/how you decided to delegate. Next, explain how you decided whom to delegate to and â€" if they didn’t report to you â€" how you enlisted their help. But don’t forget to include something about what happened after you delegated. How involved were you? How did you follow up? If things weren’t moving along as they should, how did you resolve that problem? “Give me an example of a time when you motivated others.” What they’re looking for: Emotional intelligence, empathy, and adaptability. How to answer: What you were trying to motivate people to do and exactly how you did it are less important than how you figured out what would motivate each person in the story. Focus on the process: How did you change your style for each person you were working with? “Give me an example of a time when you demonstrated initiative and took the lead.” What they’re looking for: Accountability and a sense of ownership. How to answer: Think of a situation where the easy way would have been to just do what you were told and not worry about whether that was the right thing to do. Describe why you decided to take the initiative, how you went about it, and the outcome. “Tell me about a time when you missed an obvious solution to a problem.” What they’re looking for: Critical thinking, willingness to admit error, ability to learn from mistakes. How to answer: If possible, talk about a situation where you had a plausible excuse for missing an obvious solution. But don’t phrase it as an excuse â€" just include that little tidbit when you set the stage. Then talk about how you discovered your mistake, how you reacted, and what you did to resolve the situation. “Tell me about your proudest professional accomplishment.” What they’re looking for: Insight into your values. How to answer: Don’t make it all about yourself. It’s best to talk about something that you accomplished by leading a team. And, while it’s important to include facts and figures when you talk about the results, it’s equally important to talk about any positive impact on the people involved. The key to acing a behavioral interview is to thoroughly understand what each question is really about and then prepare an answer that demonstrates those qualities. It’s critical to choose your examples ahead of time, or you’ll inevitably leave something out or focus on the wrong thing. If possible, choose stories that could be used to answer multiple questions. Hows Your Job Search Karma Right Now

Hows Your Job Search Karma Right Now Hows Your Job Search Karma Right Now 2Karma. The Boomerang Effect. Action and consequence. Call it what you will, but the possibility that the energy you send out into the universe,  good or bad, may bounce back to you in unexpected ways is a powerful idea to ponder. When it comes to your career- your job search karma- where do you stand right now? Consider this cautionary tale from London, recounted on Twitter by a job recruiter whose run-in with a potty-mouthed fellow subway commuter might give us all pause for thought. Turns out, an obscene and seemingly random remark on Londons Tube during the morning rush hour came back to bite the commenter. Oblivious to the consequences, he dropped the F-bomb when pushing past someone on his way to a job interview. That faceless someone was, in fact, the person who would be interviewing him later for the job. Oops. Talk about negative job search karma! (The upshot: Mr. F-word didnt get the job.) Heres a possible take-away: be courteous and kind, in your job hunt and in your day-to-day life, because- who knows?- you may be sending out job search karma that will come back your way. Think thats a far-fetched idea? The responses to the recruiters Tweet, detailing similar scenarios, seem to indicate otherwise. Here are reasons why job search karma may be important: What Goes Around In effect, the saying what goes around, comes around is the Cliffs Notes version of what karmas all about. Random acts of rudeness, or of kindness, might just matter. So be kind- not that you need a reason to do so. However, just in case you do, Twitter responses to the British job recruiters experience show that other people have had like encounters. Do your due diligence before an interview, know who youll be dealing with,  and take nothing for granted. The People You Meet on Your Way Up Imagine a road rage incident with a prospective job applicant or swooping in to steal the parking space of your potential future boss. The responses on Twitter detailed those encounters, offering proof that bad job search karma isnt a rarity. If youre headed into an interview, having a quiet mind to prepare yourself and gathering your thoughts beforehand may forestall moments of haste, rudeness, or bad behavior that you might regret later. Mind Your Manners Your mother may have said it best: mind your Ps and Qs. Obviously, your behavior before, during, and after a job interview can make a huge difference in whether you get the job. Never mind whether or not you might have a chance encounter with your interviewer beforehand. Rushing forward full-force and setting your manners aside can have unexpected consequences- and not in a good way. Readers, do you believe in job search karma? What experiences have you had that back up your beliefs? Tell us in the comments section below!

Apples new app limits feature can help curb smartphone use

Apple’s new 'app limits' feature can help curb smartphone use Apple’s new 'app limits' feature can help curb smartphone use Instagram lets you track how much time you waste on its app, but Apple also showed that it wasn’t far behind, announcing yesterday that the iOS 12 update coming this fall will include “App Limits” that helps restrict the amount of usage, according to your settings. But more time management options aren’t the only new things accompanying the update - others include notification management and more “Do Not Disturb” features. You might just lose fewer hours to your iPhone this fallYes, “app limits” are just what they sound like - iOS 12 will let you set an amount of time to use different apps, and the feature’s notification will prod you, warning you that your time is almost up when you’ve nearly run out of minutes. The “Screen Time” panel will show a daily and weekly breakdown of how much you’re using programs in different groups like “social networking” and “entertainment,” let you access a summary of your  app usage and display how  you’re faring ag ainst your own average.Parents will have more control over their kids’ tech usageBut it’s also looking like parents will have greater influence over their children’s phone usage with the ability to check out how they’re using their phones via “activity reports.” Although they don’t have to have their child’s device present, it’s also possible to do so if it is, of course. The  Ã¢€œDowntime” panel will also let consumers block off time where phone calls and only certain apps will be accessible.  Parents can also set this feature on their kids’ devices, but the “Block at Downtime” option takes things a step further, making the device inaccessible- although it says kids can request more time.Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering, commented on the wide-ranging update.“In iOS 12, we’re offering our users detailed information and tools to help them better understand and control the time they spend with apps and websites, how often they pick up their iPhone or iPad during the day and how they receive notifications.“We first introduced parental controls for iPhone in 2008, and our team has worked thoughtfully over the years to add features to help parents manage their children’s content. With Screen Time, these new tools are empowering users who want help managing their device time, and balancing the many things that are important to them.”So although it can be really difficult to break your overall smartphone obsession,  you might just reach a point where this is finally the case this fall:You: 1iPhone: 0Either way, best of luck.

Tips for Talking Salary at Interviews for Women

Tips for Talking Salary at Interviews for Women Tips for Talking Salary at Interviews for Women When you’re a woman who is job hunting, you’re right to be concerned about compensation. The gender gap (the difference between what men and women earn) can be significant. It’s not just a question of women earning 25.6% less than men. Overall, that’s the case, but there are significant differences based on the type of job you’re working at, your marital status, the level of the position, and the industry you work in. Payscale’s Inside the Gender Pay Gap Report details the difference, and it’s not only an interesting read. It can help you determine the best way to approach compensation when you’re talking with employers. When Is Salary an Issue for Women? Salary may â€" or may not â€" be an issue when you’re job searching. It varies depending on what you do and where you want to work. What’s tricky is knowing what applies to the employer you’re interviewing with. In general, there is more likely to be fixed pay rate for lower-level, service, entry-level, and union jobs, as well as for positions that pay at union scale, which are sometimes called prevailing rate jobs. Many large companies have a structured compensation plan that pays the same wages, regardless of gender. Don’t presume that you will be paid less solely because you’re a woman. You’re more likely to have to discuss your salary and to try to get a higher one, when you’re interviewing for mid-career to high-level positions where there are more variations in pay, not only within a company but also across industries. When you are considering jobs at a small company with unique positions, there may also be more parity issues than at a bigger employer. How to Discuss Salary During Job Interviews What’s the best way to discuss your current salary and what you expect to earn at your next job? First off, know that if you’re not comfortable doing so, you’re not alone. Most women don’t like talking about â€" or asking for â€" money. However, it’s much easier to do if you’re well-informed about what you’re worth. Here are some tips for making the process easier. Do Your Homework: Come to the interview prepared with research and data. Use websites like Payscale.com, Glassdoor.com, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics wage estimates, to get salary information for jobs and companies. You’ll be able to gather statistics on what jobs pay for someone with your qualifications, in your location, and even specifically for the company, you’re interviewing with.Get Insider Information: Do you know someone working at the company or do you have a connection who does? Ask your contacts if they can share any information on the company’s compensation structure and what jobs with the company pay. Know Your Bottom Line: It’s important to know what you need to earn to pay your bills and have something left over. Consider what the minimum salary is that you need at your next job. Do some more research to make sure your expectations are in line with the average salary for the position. Also, consider what you would be earning in a similar job at your current company if the new position is a step up. That “raise factor” is important because you may not want to change jobs if you’re not going to be earning more. Be Patient: You don’t need to be the person who brings up compensation during a job interview but do be prepared to answer questions about your salary history and how much you expect to earn at your next job. That said, if you do have a concern about whether the compensation is going meet your expectations, it’s appropriate to ask the hiring manager if there is a salary range for the position.Turn the Question Into a Discussion: One strategy is to turn the question into a conversation. When you are asked about how much you make, share the information with the interviewer. Then inquire about the compensation for the role for which you’re interviewing. That will give you some information on what the job pays so you can tailor your responses to further questions about earnings. Here are tips for discussing your salary expectations with employers. Try to Get Beyond Your Current Compensation: If the pay seems like it will be a big step up from your current salary, one strategy is to mention that the responsibilities and expectations for the new role are more demanding than your current (or last) job. You can mention that you have more skills, experience, education, certifications, or anything else that will bolster your candidacy. You could also mention that your current salary is not competitive. For example: “I am currently earning $X, but I’m aware that it is on the lower end of the scale for someone with my qualifications and experience.” Be Positive and Confident: One of the worst ways to get more money is to come across as though you need it. Go into the interview with confidence and a positive attitude. Be prepared to expand upon the credentials that got you selected for the interview, to share concrete examples of your accomplishments, and to close the interview on a high note.Be Flexible: It’s especially important for women to consider the entire compensation package. A job is more than just a paycheck. Don’t turn down a job purely based on salary. Learn about future earnings potential, benefits, perks, bonuses and the compensation plan in its entirety. Many employers offer flexible work schedules, work from home options, child care, paid leave for parents, and other benefits. Know It’s Not Just You: You’re not alone if you’re not comfortable talking about salary. It’s the same for most women. Do keep in mind that it is acceptable to discuss it with hiring managers, and to politely end the interview process if it doesn’t appear that the job is a match. That can be a smart strategy because your current earnings impact your future earnings. Unfortunately, the less you make now, the less you may be offered. That’s especially true as you move up the career ladder. Don’t Sell Yourself Short Most importantly, don’t short change yourself when you’re in a job interview and talking about pay. Know what you’re worth as an employee, know the differential between what you and your male counterpart may be earning, and get as much information as possible on what you can expect to be paid. The more informed you are, the easier it will be to avoid having an awkward conversation about compensation â€" and to get paid what you’re worth.
